Cannabis is spreading its roots into the world of health. It’s a new wonder drug, that, although known for years, is now being explored for its health benefits. In addition to its ability to fight acne, reduce anxiety, prevent cancer, treat depression, relieve arthritis, and many more, cannabis helps align body systems by reducing weight.

Mechanism of Action of Cannabis:

Our bodies have a built-in endocannabinoid system that exerts its effects through two cannabinoids (CBD) receptors namely CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are found in the brain and central nervous system while CB2 receptors are present in the rest of the body. Cannabis acts through the CB1 receptor to reduce body weight.

In obese individuals, CB1 receptors are more widespread in the fatty tissue. However, cannabis does not directly activate CB1 receptors, it exerts its effects by changing the body’s natural cannabinoid levels.

How does Cannabis help reduce body weight?

With the help of the endocannabinoid system, cannabis produces the following effects on the body’s metabolism that helps reduce body weight.

Decreases Appetite:

Researchers are studying the ability of cannabis to reduce appetite. Although cannabis is known to cause munchies, it can also activate certain CB1 agonist molecules in the body that occupy and block off the receptors, reducing appetite and prevent overeating in individuals.  According to a 2017 study “Cannabis in fat: high hopes to treat obesity” cannabis causes loss of CB1 receptors in fat cells improving the overall metabolic profile and reducing overall body weight and adiposity.

Efficient Conversion of Bad Fat Into Good Fat:

According to a study about cannabidiol conducted in 2016, CBD influences the interaction of one’s body with fat. It converts bad fat (white fat) to good fat (brown fat) in the body and stimulates the efficient breakdown of body fat. Conversion of fat and its efficient breakdown explains the promising role of cannabis for losing weight and fighting obesity. Through the downregulation of CB1 receptors, cannabis also reduces energy storage.

Burns Fat:

A group of researchers studied “the effect of cannabis on obesity “in 2018 and concluded that cannabis converts white fat into its more active form “brown fat”. Brown adipocytes burn efficiently, release heat as energy, and reduce calories. Caloric loss results in an overall loss of weight.

Subsequent Risk of Metabolic Disorders:

Obesity is a root cause of several metabolic disorders like Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Hypertension, and Hypercholesterolemia. The overactivation of cannabinoid receptors in the body contribute to Obesity increases the risk of such disorders. Cannabis is able to reduce body weight and prevent metabolic disorders by inhibiting lipogenesis. Therefore, through its ability to inhibit CB receptors, cannabis reduces the incidence of metabolic disorders.

Conclusion:

Cannabis helps lose weight through various mechanisms including downregulation of CB1 receptors, inhibition of lipogenesis, conversion of white fat to brown fat, and increased metabolism of fat. All these pathways result in less storage of body fat, weight loss, and subsequent prevention of metabolic disorders.
